In a heartfelt tribute to the late sports legend Thupden Rapgyal, the Sikkim Football Association (SFA) announces plans to host an Under-15 Boys Football tournament alongside the state’s C Division league.
Set to commence on May 15th, the Under-15 tournament will coincide with the opening of the C Division league on May 7th, seamlessly integrating matches between the two events.
Thupden Rapgyal, an esteemed figure in Sikkimese sports, left an indelible legacy in football and athletics spanning several decades. His illustrious career saw him represent Sikkim in prestigious competitions such as the Santosh Trophy and various national championships.
Rapgyal’s dedication extended beyond the field, as he pursued academic excellence and obtained degrees from renowned institutions across the country. Notably, he became the second individual from Sikkim to achieve a prestigious Coaching Diploma from Bangalore, Karnataka, showcasing his commitment to both the game and its development.
As a coach, Rapgyal mentored numerous young talents and led prominent football clubs in Sikkim to numerous tournament victories. His tireless efforts at Palzor Stadium, where he coached young boys and girls in the early hours, left an enduring impact on Sikkim’s sports community.
Throughout his career, Rapgyal received several awards and honors, including the Sikkim State Meritorious Award in 2011, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to sports development in the region.
Even after retiring from state service in 2018, Rapgyal remained actively engaged in sports, embodying the spirit of dedication and service to the community until his passing. The Under-15 Boys Football tournament stands as a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy and commitment to nurturing young talent in Sikkim’s sporting landscape.
