Responding to mounting concerns, the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission has taken a decisive step by directing the Director General of Police (DGP) to furnish a detailed report within 15 days regarding the alleged killings of two laborers during an anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest in Ichamati on March 27.
The commission’s action was prompted by an online complaint filed by Shreshta, a resident of Madurai, who alleged that the victims, Insan Sing and Sujit Dutta, both from non-indigenous communities, were fatally assaulted by unidentified individuals amid what was ostensibly intended as a peaceful anti-CAA demonstration.
According to the complainant, the protest escalated into violence, resulting in the tragic deaths of the two laborers. In light of these serious allegations, the commission has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, urging the state police chief to provide a comprehensive report.
Authorities are expected to conduct an exhaustive inquiry into the matter, ensuring that all relevant details are elucidated and submitted to the Human Rights Commission within the stipulated timeframe. This directive underscores the commission’s unwavering commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring justice for all individuals affected by such incidents.
