Meghalaya: Over 480 Houses Damaged as Rains and Thunderstorms Ravage

Meghalaya confronted widespread devastation as heavy rains and thunderstorms swept across the state, inflicting significant damage to infrastructure and displacing hundreds of residents. Disaster Management Minister Kyrmen Shylla disclosed that a staggering total of 483 houses, along with two schools and one church, bore the brunt of the disaster, affecting 949 individuals.

The onslaught of rain and strong winds commenced on Sunday and persisted in various regions of the state through Monday, exacerbating the impact of the calamity. Shylla underscored that seven out of Meghalaya’s 12 districts suffered the consequences, with Eastern West Khasi Hills bearing the greatest devastation.

Efforts to alleviate the suffering of affected residents are underway, with deputy commissioners and Block Development Officers (BDOs) mobilizing resources to provide relief to those in need. Comprehensive assessments are being conducted across districts and blocks to ascertain the extent of the damage inflicted by the disaster.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma assured the public of swift action, affirming that the district administration is operating with urgency to deliver relief to affected communities. Sangma took to social media to address the situation, highlighting the government’s commitment to providing immediate assistance to those impacted by the calamity.

As Meghalaya grapples with the aftermath of the relentless downpour and thunderstorms, collaborative efforts between government agencies and local authorities remain paramount in addressing the needs of affected residents and facilitating the recovery process.
