Tragedy Strikes as Three Assam Rifles Jawans Drown During Election Duty in Bihar

A somber atmosphere enveloped Bihar’s Samastipur district on Tuesday, May 14, as three Assam Rifles jawans, deployed for election duty during the Lok Sabha elections, met a tragic fate. The heartbreaking incident unfolded when the trio, having completed their electoral responsibilities, sought respite by venturing into the waters of a nearby river for a bath.

However, what began as a moment of relaxation soon turned into a harrowing ordeal as the jawans found themselves ensnared by the river’s strong currents. Despite their valiant efforts to stay afloat, the unforgiving waters proved overwhelming, claiming the lives of three brave soldiers.

Local residents, demonstrating immense courage and solidarity, rushed to the aid of the struggling jawans, managing to rescue two of them from the treacherous currents. However, their frantic attempts to locate and save the third jawan proved unsuccessful, leaving authorities grappling with the grim reality of a missing comrade.

Vikas Pandey, serving as the sub-divisional officer of Patori, shed light on the tragic sequence of events, remarking, “An unfortunate incident took place after the election procedure was completed where three soldiers started drowning in a river when they had to take a bath.” He continued, “The locals saved two of the jawans. The body of the third jawan is being searched with the help of SDRF.”

The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the inherent risks faced by personnel tasked with election duties, underscoring the imperative of prioritizing safety protocols and maintaining heightened vigilance during critical assignments.
