Prasad Barman, an elderly resident of Bogijuli, Sonitpur, fell victim to a violent assault on May 20, allegedly orchestrated by a group of 6-7 individuals suspecting him of involvement in marijuana sales. Barman sustained severe injuries from the attack and is currently undergoing medical treatment at a local hospital.
Eyewitnesses recounted how the mob confronted Barman, accusing him of participating in the illegal drug trade, and subjected him to a brutal beating. Despite his pleas of innocence, the assault persisted until bystanders intervened and alerted the authorities.
This disturbing incident mirrors a recent case of moral policing in Assam, where a woman in Gur village, Dalgaon, was subjected to horrifying torture by a mob on May 4. Accused of throwing stones on a neighbor’s roof, she was forcibly dragged from her home, tied to a tree, and assaulted. The attackers went to extreme lengths by dousing her body with water mixed with chili powder.
The shocking attack, captured on video and circulated on social media, triggered widespread condemnation. The woman’s husband, suspected of instigating the violence, and the neighbor were among the ten individuals named in the FIR lodged at Panbari police station. The woman, rescued by villagers, received urgent medical attention.
These incidents underscore the troubling trend of vigilante justice and moral policing in the region, prompting urgent calls for stricter law enforcement and community awareness initiatives to prevent such atrocities.
