In response to the relentless heatwave gripping Arunachal Pradesh, the state’s health department has issued a vital advisory, urging residents to prioritize hydration and take essential precautions to combat the scorching summer heat.
Driven by the surge in temperature levels, the advisory aims to tackle potential health risks such as high fever, fainting spells, and muscle cramps, which may result from prolonged exposure to extreme heat.
Dr. L Jampa, the state’s nodal officer for the National Programme for Climate Change & Human Health, stressed the urgency of the situation, citing instances where temperatures soared above normal levels by over 5.1°C in isolated regions, particularly on May 19 and 23, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
To counter the adverse effects of the sweltering climate, residents are encouraged to embrace preventive measures outlined in the advisory. These include maintaining adequate hydration levels by regularly consuming water, even when not feeling thirsty. Additionally, the advisory recommends the use of oral rehydration solutions and opting for homemade beverages like lemonade and fruit juice, along with a diet rich in seasonal fruits and vegetables.
As part of a proactive strategy to combat the heat, individuals are advised to dress in light, loose-fitting cotton attire, preferably in light colors, and to wear suitable footwear when going outdoors. Moreover, the advisory advocates for keeping living spaces well-ventilated and cool by opening windows and ventilators during the night.
Special attention is directed towards vulnerable groups, including infants, young children, outdoor workers, and individuals with underlying health conditions such as heart disease or high blood pressure, who are at increased risk during extreme weather conditions. The advisory underscores the importance of providing additional care and support to these demographics.
Furthermore, the advisory cautions against unnecessary exposure to the sun and strenuous activities during peak daytime hours, unless absolutely necessary. Residents are advised against leaving children, pets, or elderly individuals in parked vehicles, while the consumption of alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated beverages, which contribute to dehydration, is discouraged to ensure public well-being amidst the challenging weather conditions.
