In a passionate plea for political cohesion, Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal founder Akhil Gogoi has reiterated his call for the amalgamation of all regional parties in Assam. Addressing a recent gathering, Gogoi emphasized the necessity of establishing a single, unified regional party to strengthen regionalism and effectively represent the state’s interests.
“Assam requires a singular regional party to truly bolster regionalism,” remarked Gogoi. “This has been our proposition since the inception of Raijor Dal, and it remains our steadfast stance. The current fragmented landscape in Assam hampers the progress of regionalism.”
Gogoi highlighted the challenges posed by the proliferation of regional parties, asserting that the presence of numerous small parties undermines regional interests and obstructs collective advancement. “Maintaining 10-15 regional parties is untenable. Genuine empowerment of regionalism necessitates unity among these parties. Unfortunately, personal agendas often impede such unity. Those genuinely committed to Assam’s welfare must prioritize the reinforcement of regionalism.”
He underscored the importance of incorporating tribal and community associations in the unification process to foster a more inclusive and representative political environment. “Raijor Dal advocates for the amalgamation of regional parties, alongside tribal associations, under a unified front.”
Gogoi outlined a strategic approach to realize this objective: “Firstly, Raijor Dal and Asom Jatiya Parisad should unite, inviting other regional parties to join. Subsequently, after consolidating this unity, tribal and community associations should be integrated. This is imperative for Assamese society.”
Expressing apprehension that personal agendas may obstruct this unification, Gogoi emphasized its critical significance for the state’s advancement. “If personal motives impede this process, it will be regrettable for Assam,” he added.
However, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi has rejected the prospect of a merger. Akhil Gogoi affirmed, “Raijor Dal is prepared for this amalgamation. The ball is now in AJP’s court. Should they agree, we will establish a new political entity with a fresh constitution, constituting a formidable opposition to the BJP.”
In contrast, Lurinjyoti Gogoi proposed a common platform for regional parties instead of a complete merger, emphasizing the significance of a united front to offer a superior political alternative for Assam. He suggested that collaboration without amalgamation could still achieve their objectives.
The future trajectory of Assam’s political landscape hangs in the balance as Akhil Gogoi’s call for unity presents a pivotal decision point for regional parties. Will they unite to forge a potent coalition, or will they opt for a more fragmented approach as proposed by Lurinjyoti Gogoi?
