Shillong, June 4, 2024 — Following the National People’s Party’s (NPP) setback in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has expressed respect for the people’s decision and extended his best wishes to the victorious candidates.
The Congress party’s candidate, Saleng A. Sangma, achieved a decisive victory in the Tura Lok Sabha seat, defeating Agatha K. Sangma of the NPP by a significant margin of 1,55,241 votes. Saleng A. Sangma secured 3,83,919 votes, while Agatha K. Sangma, the incumbent MP and sister of the Chief Minister, received 2,28,678 votes. Zenith M. Sangma of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) finished third with 48,709 votes.
Chief Minister Sangma also extended congratulations to Voice of the People Party candidate Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon, who maintained a lead over NPP’s Ampareen Lyngdoh in the Shillong constituency.
Taking to the microblogging site X, CM Sangma stated, “We humbly accept and respect the mandate of the people and wish Mr. Saleng A. Sangma and Mr. Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon the very best.”
The outcome signifies a notable setback for the NPP, a member of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), highlighting the shifting political dynamics in the region.
