Outrage and Calls for Justice Following the Murder of Ledo ITI Student

The brutal murder of Aditya Bhumij, a 20-year-old student from Ledo ITI, has sparked outrage and demands for justice from the local community and fellow students. On Wednesday, more than 500 residents from Purana Line Namdang Tea Estate and students from Ledo ITI gathered at the Margherita police station, insisting on stringent action against the perpetrators.

Aditya Bhumij’s lifeless body was found near the McLeod Russell Company Namdang Tea Estate on the night of June 1st, causing shock and grief in the community. Described as a loyal friend by his peers, Aditya’s untimely death has left a profound void. The community is calling for justice, demanding that the three accused—Albert Chetry, Dev Paik, and Gaurav Kumar—face either capital punishment or life imprisonment.

Under the leadership of Officer-in-Charge Protap Gogoi, the Margherita police swiftly arrested the three suspects in connection with the murder. The tragic events unfolded when Aditya left his home around 8:00 pm after receiving a call from his friends, Pranjal Jyoti Sharma and Ujjal Sonowal. While the group was reportedly socializing in the garden, an altercation with Chetry, Paik, and Kumar ensued. Although Sharma and Sonowal managed to escape, Aditya was violently assaulted with stones and a machete.

Expressing profound grief over her son’s untimely demise, Aditya’s mother recounted the harrowing ordeal of his forcible abduction from their home. Local resident Ajay Tanti has appealed to the Margherita sub-divisional administration and police to take urgent action to ensure swift justice for Aditya.

The tragic incident has highlighted the escalating issue of substance abuse among youth in the Margherita sub-division, contributing to a surge in criminal activities. Aditya’s body was transported to Tinsukia for a postmortem examination and was subsequently returned for his final rites on Sunday night. Meanwhile, the police are diligently interrogating Sharma and Sonowal to glean further insights into the unfortunate incident.
