Successful Joint Operation Leads to Capture of Notorious Smuggler in Meghalaya

In a meticulously coordinated operation on the night of June 7, 2024, near Hallidayganj in Meghalaya’s Char Kasharipara area, a joint task force comprising Assam and Meghalaya police successfully apprehended a notorious international smuggler. The individual, identified as Sahinur Islam, known by the alias “Kasa,” has long been associated with illegal trafficking of cattle and sugar into Bangladesh through the Dhubri and South Salmara Mankachar district routes.

Under the leadership of Sub-Inspector (P) Bikash Saikia from Sukchar Police Station in South Salmara Mankachar district, the operation specifically targeted Kasa, a seasoned player in the smuggling domain. With a history of orchestrating cross-border smuggling networks, Kasa has remained a priority target for law enforcement due to his extensive criminal record.

The successful arrest highlights the collaborative synergy between Assam and Meghalaya police forces in combating rampant cross-border smuggling activities. Despite operating from an area falling under Meghalaya’s jurisdiction, Kasa had eluded Assam’s law enforcement for a considerable period, orchestrating various illicit activities, including assaults on police personnel.

Accused of enlisting a gang to shield himself and facilitate his illegal operations, Kasa’s criminal exploits have resulted in multiple cases filed against him in Assam. His apprehension signifies a significant breakthrough in regional law enforcement’s relentless efforts to stem smuggling activities and uphold security in the vicinity.

Sub-Inspector (P) Saikia’s instrumental role in apprehending several foreign livestock and sugar smugglers in recent months has sent shockwaves among local criminal elements engaged in smuggling operations. Following his capture, Kasa was remanded to judicial custody in Dhubri, bringing him closer to facing the full force of justice.
