Following the BJP-led NDA alliance’s impressive performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has exuded confidence in securing a resounding victory in the upcoming 2026 assembly polls. Sarma announced that the BJP and its allies have set an ambitious target of winning 90-100 seats out of the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly.
In the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP clinched victory in nine out of the 11 constituencies it contested, while its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) secured one seat out of the two it contested. The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) also emerged victorious in the sole seat it contested. Despite the BJP’s dominance, the Congress-led INDIA bloc managed to secure victories in three seats in the state.
According to data from the Election Commission of India (ECI), the BJP and its allies led in a total of 93 assembly constituencies across Assam. The BJP alone led in 76 assembly segments, with the AGP and UPPL leading in 10 and seven constituencies, respectively.
The BJP’s stronghold was evident across various Lok Sabha constituencies, leading in numerous assembly seats under key regions such as Dibrugarh, Guwahati, Kaziranga, and Darrang-Udalguri, among others.
Despite the BJP’s formidable position, the Congress-led INDIA alliance managed to lead in 31 assembly constituencies, with significant victories in areas such as Jorhat, Dhubri, Nagaon, and Karimganj.
One notable victory was Congress candidate Rakibul Hussain’s record-breaking win in the Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency, securing a victory margin of over 10.12 lakh votes against AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal.
With Sarma’s ambitious targets and the BJP’s strong electoral performance, the stage is set for a highly anticipated showdown in the 2026 Assam assembly polls.
