Tripura Minister Initiates Helmet Distribution Drive to Curb Rising Road Fatalities

In a proactive measure to address the escalating number of road accidents in Tripura, Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury launched a campaign on June 14 to distribute free helmets to the public. The initiative aims to combat the state’s alarming rate of approximately 250 fatal road accidents each year, many of which result in severe head injuries due to the absence of helmets.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Chowdhury stressed the devastating consequences of road accidents, not only for victims but also for their families who often face significant financial burdens. According to data from the transport department, Tripura witnesses an average of 700 to 750 two-wheeler accidents annually, with around 250 leading to critical injuries or fatalities.

The helmet distribution drive is part of broader efforts by the transport department and traffic authorities to promote road safety. Chowdhury expressed concern over the persistently low adherence to safety measures among motorcycle riders, despite ongoing awareness campaigns and initiatives. He emphasized that wearing helmets is crucial in reducing injuries and saving lives during accidents.

As the campaign progresses, Chowdhury urged all residents to prioritize road safety, emphasizing that such measures are essential for safeguarding lives and preventing avoidable tragedies on Tripura’s roads.
