IMD Issues Orange Alert for Sikkim, Urges Precautions Amid Expected Rainfall

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Sikkim on June 19, predicting light to moderate rainfall with intermittent intense spells across several districts including Gangtok, Mangan, Namchi, Pakyong, and Soreng.

According to the IMD, the rainfall is expected to commence around 9:25 am and continue over the next 2-3 hours. Residents are advised to stay indoors and take necessary precautions during thunderstorm activity.

“Light to moderate rain with one or two intense spells very likely over some parts during the next 2-3 hours from 9:25 on June 19,” stated the IMD in its advisory, stressing safety measures amidst potential thunderstorm conditions.

Simultaneously, efforts to evacuate stranded tourists in North Sikkim entered their second day on June 19. Under the leadership of ADM Mangan, the Sikkim administration successfully evacuated 1,225 tourists from Lachung and surrounding regions. The operation, which began at 8 am, ensured the safe transport of all tourists to Mangan.

The administration continues to monitor the situation closely, prioritizing the safety and well-being of residents and visitors amidst the anticipated weather conditions.

As Sikkim prepares for the incoming rainfall, authorities remain vigilant, urging the public to adhere strictly to safety guidelines and stay informed about further updates from the IMD and local administration.
