The Sikkim administration has successfully carried out a large-scale evacuation operation, rescuing 1,225 tourists from the regions of Lachung and surrounding areas in response to severe landslides. The operation, which commenced at 8 am on June 19, was spearheaded by ADM Mangan Vishu Lama under the directives of District Magistrate Hem Kumar Chettri.
Key officials, including SP Mangan Sonam Detchu Bhutia and BDO Mangan Kailash Thapa, collaborated with teams from various departments, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local panchayats, and volunteers. Their coordinated efforts ensured the safe passage of tourists through hazardous terrain affected by ongoing landslides.
Transportation was facilitated by vehicles provided by the Motor Vehicle Division under the Transport Department, navigating passable roads to transport evacuees. Upon reaching Mangan, the rescued tourists expressed heartfelt gratitude to the state government, administration, BRO, NDRF, SDRF, and local communities for their swift response and assistance during the crisis.
While air evacuation plans remain on standby, contingent upon weather conditions, six MI helicopters stationed at Bagdogra are ready for immediate deployment if needed. The district administration remains vigilant and prepared to address any further challenges that may arise from the ongoing landslide situation.
The Trishakti Corps has played a pivotal role in supporting the evacuation efforts, aiding in the safe transport of over 1,200 tourists who had been stranded since June 12 and 13. Since the commencement of evacuation operations on June 17, troops have provided essential assistance to civil authorities, facilitating the movement of tourists by both foot and vehicle as conditions permit.
This coordinated effort underscores the commitment of Sikkim’s administration and security forces to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents and visitors affected by the natural disaster.
