Assam Floods: Grim Situation Persists as Over 3.90 Lakh People Affected

Assam continues to battle severe flooding, with more than 3.90 lakh people affected across 19 districts despite a slight respite from rainfall in some areas, officials confirmed on Saturday.

The death toll from this year’s floods, landslides, and storms has tragically risen to 37, with one person still reported missing. The affected districts include Kamrup, Tamulpur, Hailakandi, Udalguri, Hojai, Dhubri, Barpeta, Biswanath, Nalbari, Bongaigaon, Baksa, Karimganj, South Salmara, Goalpara, Darrang, Bajali, Nagaon, Cachar, and Kamrup Metropolitan.

According to reports as of Friday evening, a total of 3,90,491 individuals remain impacted by the flooding. While this number reflects a slight decrease from the 4.09 lakh reported on Thursday, the number of affected districts remains unchanged.

Karimganj emerges as the worst-hit district, with over 2.40 lakh residents affected by rising floodwaters. Key rivers like the Kopili at Kampur and Dharamtul, and the Barak at BP Ghat and Kushiyara in Karimganj, are flowing well above the danger mark.

In response to the ongoing crisis, more than 100 relief camps have been set up, offering shelter to over 15,000 people. Additionally, 125 relief distribution centres are operational to provide essential supplies.

The floods have caused extensive damage to homes, cattle sheds, roads, bridges, embankments, and other critical infrastructure across multiple districts, officials confirmed. The state government continues to monitor the situation closely, coordinating rescue and relief operations to support affected communities and mitigate further hardship.
