Meghalaya Urges Central Support to Boost Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Sectors

Shillong, June 24 – Meghalaya’s Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister, AL Hek, has appealed to the central government for assistance aimed at revitalizing the state’s animal husbandry and fisheries sectors, crucial sources of livelihood for rural communities.

During a meeting with George Kurien, Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Hek highlighted concerns over the declining numbers of milch livestock in Meghalaya. He stressed the significance of these sectors in supporting the local economy and alleviating poverty, particularly in rural areas.

“In Meghalaya, traditional livestock like pigs and cattle are pivotal to our agricultural practices. However, there has been a decline in milch livestock, which is critical for the livelihoods of the poor,” Hek emphasized.

He underscored the potential for growth in livestock and poultry farming, which currently contributes approximately 6 percent to India’s livestock sector. Hek noted a shift towards rearing less capital-intensive animals, aligning with the state’s predominantly backyard-based farming practices.

Regarding fisheries, Hek highlighted Meghalaya’s abundant freshwater fish resources, renowned globally for their biodiversity. He emphasized the state’s potential to develop and expand its fisheries sector, which could create additional employment opportunities and bolster economic growth.

The minister outlined plans to draft a proposal aimed at modernizing Meghalaya’s animal husbandry and fisheries industries. This initiative aims to harness the full potential of these sectors, ensuring sustainable growth and maximizing their contributions to the state’s economy.

Hek’s appeal for central assistance underscores the importance of revitalizing these sectors to enhance livelihoods, promote economic development, and meet the growing demands of Meghalaya’s agricultural and fisheries communities.
