New Delhi, June 28: Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of the Indian National Congress in the Lok Sabha, has called for immediate accountability measures after the roof collapse at Terminal-1 of Delhi Airport. Gogoi highlighted concerns over airport infrastructure safety nationwide in a post on X.
“Serious accountability must be enforced following the T1 airport roof collapse. We witnessed a similar incident at Guwahati Adani airport not long ago. Without extreme weather, such structural failures are alarming. What actions has the Ministry of Civil Aviation taken in recent years?” Gogoi wrote.
The incident at Delhi Airport, which occurred early on June 28 amid heavy rains, resulted in one fatality and injuries to five others when a portion of the roof collapsed onto parked cars, including taxis. This mirrors a previous incident at Assam’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati on March 31. A severe downpour and storm caused a section of the roof to collapse in the forecourt area, leading to significant terminal flooding but no reported injuries. Videos of the Guwahati incident circulated widely on social media, raising questions about the structural integrity of airport facilities.
Gogoi’s remarks have intensified scrutiny on the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which has yet to address the raised concerns. The repeated roof collapses at major airports underscore the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols and thorough infrastructure inspections.
As the investigation into the Delhi Airport incident progresses, there is mounting pressure on the Ministry to address these safety issues and implement preventive measures to protect passengers and airport staff from future incidents.
