Meghalaya’s Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang, has raised concerns over a significant increase in crimes against women and children in the state, with such incidents accounting for 32 percent of total reported crimes in 2023. The revelation came during a conference held at the Meghalaya Police Headquarters, chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, where tackling these issues emerged as a primary agenda.
DGP Nongrang highlighted the urgency of addressing the rising trend of crimes against women and children, along with the escalating challenge of cybercrime. She emphasized the need to establish a specialized cyber wing within the police force to effectively combat cyber offenses, noting the government’s firm commitment to launching this new unit.
In response to the upcoming implementation of three new criminal laws nationwide, Nongrang informed that the Meghalaya Police had conducted extensive training sessions to prepare for the transition to the new legal framework. She also mentioned ongoing discussions with the Home Ministry and other states to ensure uniformity and effective implementation of these laws across the country.
“We recently organized panel discussions to delve into various aspects of the upcoming laws and their implications,” Nongrang stated, underscoring collaborative efforts aimed at refining strategies for their enforcement.
The proactive measures by the Meghalaya Police underscore their commitment to safeguarding vulnerable groups and enhancing overall security in the state amidst evolving challenges. Further steps are anticipated as authorities continue to strengthen initiatives aimed at curbing crimes and ensuring public safety across Meghalaya.
