Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has launched a scathing critique against the Central Water Commission (CWC), accusing it of neglecting Assam amidst the state’s severe flood crisis. Taking to microblogging site X, Gogoi emphasized the urgent necessity for a comprehensive, long-term solution and substantial financial investment to address the recurring challenges of floods and erosion in Assam.
Representing the Jorhat constituency, Gogoi pointed out the lack of significant progress in flood management efforts over the past eight years under the ‘double-engine’ BJP government at both state and central levels. He specifically called on the Minister of Jal Shakti to visit Assam and witness the dire situation firsthand amid these trying times.
The MP’s concerns were underscored by recent developments, with Gogoi reporting on July 8th that ongoing floods have tragically claimed 78 lives across Assam. In a series of tweets, he detailed the widespread devastation caused by relentless rains, which have inundated homes and displaced numerous families. Gogoi’s visits to affected areas around Jorhat revealed extensive damage to infrastructure and livelihoods, painting a stark picture of the crisis.
Highlighting the broader impacts, Gogoi stressed the severe losses in agriculture and livestock, warning of potential food security crises in the affected regions. He urged immediate action from authorities to provide urgent relief and support to communities grappling with the aftermath of the floods.
