Guwahati, July 20, 2024 — In response to growing violence in Bangladesh, 78 students from Assam have been successfully evacuated through Meghalaya’s Dawki Integrated Check Post as of July 19. This comes amidst widespread unrest sparked by demands for changes to the country’s job quota system.
The evacuation followed several days of heightened tensions and violent confrontations between student protesters and police in Bangladesh, which have resulted in at least 105 fatalities. The unrest prompted Bangladeshi authorities to enforce a nationwide curfew and take stringent measures to restore order.
According to the Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj, 22 students from Assam crossed into India via the Sutarkandi border on July 19, with an additional four arriving on July 20. The DC reassured that the border areas remain unaffected by the unrest in Bangladesh and announced that an Additional Commissioner and Deputy Superintendent of Police have been deployed to oversee the situation.
The crisis in Bangladesh has raised significant concern, with ongoing efforts to manage and mitigate the effects of the protests. The situation remains fluid, with continued monitoring and support provided to affected students and their families.
