Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang Announces Comprehensive Support Measures for Journalists

Gangtok, July 22, 2024 — During the 22nd Foundation Day celebrations of the Press Club of Sikkim, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at supporting and recognizing the state’s journalists. These measures reflect the government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare and professional recognition of media professionals.

Chief Minister Tamang highlighted the existing awards for journalistic excellence, including the Teesta Rangeet Abiral Kalam Puraskar, awarded on Independence Day, and the Kanchenjunga Kalam Puraskar. At the event, he announced that two journalists received the Kanchenjunga Kalam Puraskar, with an annual allocation of Rs 1,01,000 for future recipients.

Introducing new measures, Tamang launched the Lagansil Yuva Puraskar, awarded to two journalists this year. He pledged to increase the prize money for this award to Rs 51,000 starting next year, further encouraging young journalists in their endeavors.

Addressing concerns about post-retirement support for veteran journalists, Tamang announced the creation of a pension scheme. The Press Club of Sikkim and the Department of Information and Public Relations will establish the criteria for pension distribution, with funding provided as a grant-in-aid from the Chief Minister’s Fund.

Additionally, the Chief Minister discussed extending medical insurance benefits to journalists, mirroring the health insurance scheme available to government employees. He promised to collaborate with the Press Club of Sikkim to finalize a comprehensive medical coverage plan, ensuring journalists have access to essential healthcare services.

These announcements underscore the government’s dedication to supporting the press and recognizing the vital role journalists play in society.
