Samaguri, Assam, July 30, 2024 — The tranquil village of Samaguri has been thrown into turmoil by the frequent visits of wild elephants, which have been roaming the Gendhali Shintiya field for several months. While these majestic animals are a symbol of the region’s rich wildlife, their presence has led to significant challenges for local residents.
The elephants have been causing extensive damage, trampling crops and destroying property. This disruption has transformed the villagers’ initial awe into a persistent state of anxiety.
In response, the community has taken proactive measures to safeguard their homes and fields. Barriers have been erected, and other protective strategies have been employed. Despite these efforts, the unpredictable movements of the elephants continue to pose a serious challenge, leaving the village in a precarious situation between admiration for wildlife and the need for security.
