Assam Opposition Consolidates: 18-Party Alliance Forms to Challenge BJP in 2026

In a pivotal move for Assam’s political landscape, the United Opposition Forum Assam (UOFA) has solidified its alliance by expanding to 18 parties, aiming to present a united front against the ruling BJP in the 2026 state assembly elections. This decision marks a significant escalation in opposition unity.

The expansion was announced at a meeting on Sunday, where Congress spokesperson Bedabrat Bora confirmed that all member parties are committed to working collectively to unseat the BJP. The immediate focus for the UOFA will be the upcoming panchayat elections, which will serve as a critical test of their unified strategy.

CPI(M) central committee member Isfaqur Rahman emphasized that the meeting also addressed internal coordination issues and sought to enhance collaborative efforts among the parties. The alliance has also voiced criticism of the state government’s handling of flood and erosion challenges, calling for more proactive measures and better engagement with the central government.

The newly expanded alliance includes Congress, TMC, AAP, Raijor Dal, AJP, CPI(M), CPI, AIFB, CPI(ML), Jatiya Dal-Asom (U), Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar), Samajwadi Party, Purbancholio Lok Parishad (PLP), RJD, APHLC, Kamatapur Front, and Sonowal Kachari Gana Mancha. This diverse coalition is set to play a significant role in shaping Assam’s political future leading up to the 2026 elections.
