Dhaka, Bangladesh – Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has issued a fervent appeal to Bangladesh’s security forces to uphold the constitution and prevent any unelected government from seizing power. Joy expressed concerns that failure to act could reverse the progress achieved over the past 15 years and potentially lead Bangladesh into a situation similar to Pakistan’s.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Joy emphasized the urgency of the crisis: “To the Police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and our military, I urge you to recognize your duty to protect our people and our constitution. It is crucial that no unelected government is allowed to take control, even temporarily. Such a scenario could undo our 15 years of progress and jeopardize Bangladesh’s future. We must avoid this at all costs.”
Joy also condemned the ongoing protests, labeling them as acts of terrorism due to the violence and casualties they have caused.
The political climate in Bangladesh remains highly volatile following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation amidst escalating unrest. What began as student protests demanding the abolition of government job quotas has expanded into widespread anti-government demonstrations.
Recent violence in Dhaka has claimed at least 135 lives, including 14 police officers, and left hundreds more injured.
Sheikh Hasina arrived in India on August 5. It is unclear whether she will stay in Delhi or proceed to another location, with speculation about a potential move to London.
