Sheikh Hasina Resigns and Seeks Asylum in the UK Amid Ongoing Violence in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Bangladesh – Sheikh Hasina, who has led Bangladesh for 15 years, has resigned and reportedly fled the country amidst severe anti-government protests. On August 5, she sought asylum in the United Kingdom after arriving at India’s Hindon Airbase on a military flight.

At the airbase, Hasina met with Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and other senior officials. She is currently awaiting clearance for her travel to the UK and may remain in India temporarily if needed, according to reports from India Today.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy has called for an independent UN investigation into the unrest in Bangladesh, casting uncertainty on Hasina’s asylum request. Sources suggest that Hasina intends to relocate to London to seek asylum, although her exact plans remain unclear.

Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Hasina’s son, expressed his mother’s disappointment in an interview, defending her tenure as prime minister. Joy mentioned that Hasina plans to spend time with her grandchildren and does not foresee an immediate return to Bangladesh.

The resignation triggered celebrations in Dhaka, despite the ongoing violence that has claimed over 300 lives. Following Hasina’s departure, Bangladesh’s Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman has announced the formation of an interim government, excluding the Awami League. General Zaman emphasized a commitment to halting violence and addressing injustices.
