Chittagong, Bangladesh – Amid escalating political turmoil, at least six police stations in Chittagong faced attacks, vandalism, and arson on August 5, resulting in the looting of weapons, ammunition, and various equipment. This surge of violence followed the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, according to reports from the Dhaka Tribune.
The targeted police stations, all under the jurisdiction of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), include Chandgaon, Patenga, EPZ, Kotowali, Akbar Shah, and Pahartali. Initially sparked by celebratory gatherings, the unrest rapidly escalated into violent attacks directed at police facilities as well as the homes and offices of Awami League leaders and activists.
Several police officers sustained injuries during these assaults, with the assailants managing to seize a significant amount of police weaponry and equipment. The most intense clashes occurred around 5 p.m. local time when attackers attempted to breach the main gate of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police Lines in Dampara. In an effort to control the situation, police deployed tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the mob.
Despite these measures, hundreds of people continued to converge in front of the main gate, attempting to storm the police commissioner’s office. The agitated crowd, refusing to disperse, began hurling bricks at the office, intensifying the chaotic scene.
This wave of violence underscores the severe challenges facing Bangladesh as authorities grapple with maintaining order amidst deepening political instability.
