Dhaka – Following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, Bangladesh has witnessed escalating violence, including attacks on religious and cultural institutions.
In a significant incident, the ISKCON temple in Meherpur, Khulna division, was set ablaze by attackers. The fire destroyed the temple and its sacred deities, though three devotees residing there escaped unharmed. ISKCON spokesperson Yudhistir Govinda Das confirmed the destruction via X (formerly Twitter).
The attack is part of a disturbing trend, with at least four Hindu temples targeted on August 5. Kajol Debnath of the Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council expressed concern over the rising threats to religious minorities amid the unrest.
The violence also affected cultural institutions, including the Indian cultural centre in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area. The Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, known for promoting cultural exchange between India and Bangladesh, sustained significant damage.
These events highlight the deepening crisis in Bangladesh following Hasina’s resignation, marked by widespread vandalism and communal violence.
