Bangladesh Descends into Chaos: Over 20 Awami League Leaders and Their Families Killed

Dhaka, Bangladesh – The resignation and exit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have plunged Bangladesh into severe unrest, resulting in the deaths of over 20 Awami League leaders and their families.

Reports from the Dhaka Tribune indicate that violence has been particularly intense in Satkhira, where at least 10 individuals died as mobs targeted the properties of Awami League leaders. In Cumilla, 11 people, including five teenagers, were killed, with a fire at the residence of former councilor Mohammad Shah Alam claiming six lives and critically injuring ten others.

Additional violence was reported in the house of MP Shafiqul Islam Shimul, where a fire resulted in four fatalities. In Bogra, two Awami League youth wing leaders were hacked to death by a mob, while six bodies were discovered at the home of district Awami League Joint General Secretary Suman Khan.

The ongoing violence, triggered by Hasina’s resignation, has led to over 400 deaths nationwide. The Hindu minority community has faced particularly severe attacks, with numerous homes, businesses, and temples destroyed.

Bangladesh’s Jamaat-e-Islami has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attacks on minorities and Hindu temples. Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer, has called for the immediate establishment of a people’s government and condemned the violence. He urged the public to resist the unrest and vowed full cooperation with authorities to restore order.
