4.4 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Sikkim, No Damage or Injuries Reported

In the early morning of August 9, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck Sikkim, causing tremors to be felt across the state. The National Center for Seismology recorded the earthquake at around 6:57 am, with the epicenter located at 27.22N latitude and 88.33E longitude, approximately 10 kilometers below the earth’s surface.

The quake’s epicenter, situated about 29 kilometers from Tadong, sent mild tremors throughout the region. Despite the quake’s strength, there have been no reports of casualties or damage to infrastructure, offering relief to residents who were briefly shaken by the event.

This incident follows a similar seismic occurrence in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on June 26, where a 3.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded at a depth of 25 kilometers. These events underscore the persistent seismic activity in India’s northeastern region, reminding locals of the importance of earthquake preparedness.
