Sonitpur, August 12, 2024 — In a significant operation, the Assam Police have seized a large cache of weapons and explosives, including five Chinese-origin hand grenades, in Bilasiguri-Batasipur village within Dhekiajuli Police Station jurisdiction, Sonitpur district. The early morning raid led to the recovery of five Chinese hand grenades, five handmade grenades, a pistol, a revolver, and five detonators.
Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh highlighted the importance of the operation in maintaining regional peace and security. According to Singh, the recovered arsenal is believed to be linked to the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), a militant group that has historically posed security challenges in Assam. The NDFB, originally founded as the Bodo Security Force (BdSF) on October 3, 1986, later renamed on November 25, 1994, has been under a ceasefire agreement with the Assam and Union Government since May 2005.
This discovery emphasizes the ongoing difficulties in fully disarming and neutralizing the remnants of insurgent groups. The successful operation represents a crucial step towards ensuring long-term peace and stability in the region.
