Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Raises Alarm Over Demographic Changes in Independence Day Speech

During Assam’s Independence Day celebrations, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma voiced serious concerns about the state’s shifting demographic landscape. Speaking at the event, where he hoisted the national flag, Sarma highlighted what he perceives as a “precarious” situation regarding the balance between Hindu and Muslim populations.

Sarma noted that the Muslim population in Assam had risen to 41% by 2021, while the Hindu population had decreased to 57%, with other communities, including Christians, comprising the rest. He expressed worry that indigenous communities are increasingly feeling marginalized, particularly in 12-13 districts where they are becoming minorities.

In his address, Sarma emphasized the need for effective family planning and awareness about polygamy as measures to address these demographic shifts. He underscored the importance of a robust state government to safeguard the interests of indigenous people and reiterated his commitment to their welfare and protection.
