On the 78th Independence Day, Shillong’s Polo Grounds came alive with vibrant celebrations led by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. The event showcased a grand parade featuring personnel from the Border Security Force, CRPF, and local school bands, reflecting the state’s unity and national pride.
Chief Minister Sangma took the opportunity to honor several distinguished individuals for their outstanding contributions:
- Police Medals for Meritorious Service were awarded to Dr. Sacheng R. Marak, Assistant Inspector General of Police, and Havildar Anil Kumar Singh.
- Fire Service Medals for Meritorious Service recognized Raju Ram Rabha and Bhupesh Ch. Hajong.
- Home Guards & Civil Defence Medals were presented to Ram Charles Lamare and Prafulla Basumatary.
- Director General Commendation Certificates were given to 15 notable personnel, including MK Sangma and RP Khongwar.
In addition, CM Sangma acknowledged 48 scholars under the Chief Minister’s Research Grant (CMRG) for their contributions to research in arts, culture, and indigenous communities.
The March Past competition saw Holy Cross Secondary School, St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, and Auxilium Higher Secondary School earn top honors. The celebrations also featured heartfelt tributes to Shillong Municipal Board workers and a series of cultural performances that highlighted the state’s rich heritage and dedication to excellence.
