In a move aimed at bolstering Meghalaya’s tourism industry, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced the introduction of ‘Tourist Assistants’ on August 14, the eve of Independence Day. These semi-uniformed personnel will act as guides, provide security, and offer crucial information to visitors, enhancing both safety and the overall tourist experience.
Addressing recent concerns over law and order issues affecting tourism, Sangma emphasized the need for collaborative efforts with traditional leaders, local organizations, and stakeholders to foster a welcoming environment. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to attract more tourists and improve the state’s tourism infrastructure.
Over the past six years, the Meghalaya government has undertaken numerous projects to establish the state as a premier tourist destination. These include upgrading infrastructure like hotels and resorts, enhancing amenities such as skywalks and museums, and revitalizing key areas like Shillong to appeal to both domestic and international tourists.
The phased rollout of ‘Tourist Assistants’ is expected to improve visitor safety and satisfaction while reinforcing Meghalaya’s reputation as a hospitable and well-managed destination.
