Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh has publicly apologized following the emergence of a video showing police officers using excessive force during a vehicle inspection. The footage, which circulated widely on social media platform X, depicts officers striking individuals with canes during a routine check, sparking widespread concern about police practices.
The video captures police interacting with motorcyclists, with an officer seen hitting a person on the lower back with a cane. Although the exact location and date of the incident are unconfirmed, the presence of a national flag suggests it occurred on August 15.
In response to the video, DGP Singh issued a formal apology on X, stating, “I sincerely apologize for the inappropriate use of force.” He stressed that such measures should be reserved for dealing with unlawful assemblies and criminal activities. “Force should only be used when absolutely necessary and within legal bounds,” Singh added.
Singh assured the public that corrective measures have been implemented, including advising and counseling the involved officers and their supervisors. This response highlights the Assam police’s commitment to upholding proper conduct and maintaining public trust.
