Kohima, August 17, 2024 — Healthcare services in Nagaland were significantly impacted on Saturday as medical professionals across the state joined a strike in response to the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The strike, organized by the Indian Medical Association Nagaland State Branch (IMANSB), the Nagaland In-Service Doctors’ Association (NIDA), and the Indian Dental Association Nagaland State Branch (IDANSB), lasted from 6 am to 6 pm.
During the strike, all non-emergency services were halted to support the nationwide protest led by the Indian Medical Association (IMA). Dr. Aonungdok Tushi Ao, honorary secretary of IMANSB, emphasized the urgent need for enhanced protection for healthcare workers, a sentiment echoed nationwide.
The Naga Hospital Authority Kohima reported that while outpatient departments (OPDs) were closed, emergency services remained operational. The IDANSB underscored the importance of ensuring a safe working environment and called for increased security and justice for healthcare professionals.
NIDA members participated in the strike by wearing black bands and badges as a mark of respect for the victim. The tragic incident in Kolkata has ignited widespread outrage and calls for systemic reforms to protect medical personnel.
