Guwahati, August 26, 2024 — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called for the resignation of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, accusing him of failing to address key issues and meet election promises made in 2019. Sarma criticized the Jharkhand government for its handling of illegal infiltration and recent protests, arguing that the administration has fallen short of expectations.
Sarma labeled the Jharkhand government as a failure, highlighting its alleged ineffectiveness in regulating illegal activities and addressing youth concerns. He expressed particular discontent with Soren’s leadership, stating that it has not lived up to the commitments made to the people of Jharkhand.
The criticism also extended to the response of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance to a Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) protest in Ranchi. Sarma condemned the use of tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets by the police to disperse demonstrators, describing it as an excessive and unprecedented measure that he likened unfavorably to experiences with militant groups like ULFA.
Sarma has demanded the removal of Jharkhand’s Director General of Police (DGP), accusing him of overseeing a system that hinders fair electoral processes. He challenged the DGP to disclose the identities of 12,000 individuals booked under non-bailable sections during the protest, threatening legal action if the information is not provided.
As Jharkhand’s assembly elections approach, Sarma vowed to continue advocating for democratic rights and better protest management, underscoring the importance of protecting democratic processes and ensuring fair governance.
