Mizoram Police Rescue Three Mizo Women Stranded in Syria After 20-Month Ordeal

Aizawl, August 26, 2024: In a remarkable rescue operation, Mizoram Police have successfully brought back three Mizo women who had been stranded in Syria for nearly 20 months. The women, who left Mizoram in 2022, were sent to Syria by a private placement agency to work as housemaids but soon found themselves in dire circumstances.

The rescue mission, which involved extensive coordination between the Mizoram Police, the Indian Embassy in Damascus, and Syrian authorities, culminated in the women’s return to India on August 24. Two of the women hail from Hnahthial district, and the third is from Champhai district.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Home Minister K Sapdanga were actively involved in the rescue efforts, which began in May. After weeks of legal negotiations, the women were sheltered at the Indian Embassy in Damascus while their exit visas were processed. They were finally flown to New Delhi on August 20 before arriving in Aizawl on Saturday.

The women, who endured significant hardships during their time in Syria, are set to return to their respective villages later this week to reunite with their families.
