Guwahati, August 31, 2024 — The Autumn Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly has marked a historic milestone with the passage of several transformative bills. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the session as a significant achievement for the state’s legislative progress.
Notable legislations include:
• The Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Bill, 2024: Aimed at addressing child marriage by mandating official registration of Muslim marriages and divorces.
• The Assam Land and Revenue Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2024: Seeks to protect Assam’s heritage and iconic structures through revised land and revenue regulations.
Other key bills passed are:
• The Assam Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Reservation of Vacancies in Services and Posts) (Amendment) Bill, 2024: Enhances reservation policies for SC and ST communities.
• The Assam Official Language (Amendment) Bill, 2024: Updates official language use in the state.
• The Assam Urban Water Bodies (Preservation and Conservation) Bill, 2024: Focuses on conserving urban water bodies to tackle environmental issues.
• The Assam Skill University (Amendment) Bill, 2024: Strengthens skill development and vocational training initiatives.
Chief Minister Sarma praised the session’s achievements, stating, “These legislations will transform Assam, empower our communities, and strengthen women’s role in our society.” The session reflects a strong commitment to social equity, heritage preservation, and sustainable development in Assam.
