Barpeta, September 4, 2024 — The Barpeta district police made significant strides in combating the illegal trade of counterfeit gold in Assam, arresting three individuals in Howly who were involved in a scheme to sell fake gold. The arrests came as a result of a meticulously planned operation based on a credible tip-off.
The operation, led by Rajiv Neog, the in-charge of Howly Police Station, culminated in the arrest of Rashidul Haque from Sonapur Reserve village in Lakhimpur, along with Abdur Rahim and Hussain Ali from Phulki Para village in Howly. The suspects were apprehended while attempting to sell a counterfeit gold boat to an unsuspecting buyer.
The arrests took place at the residence of Abdur Rahim in Phulki Para, where police successfully thwarted the fraudulent transaction. Investigations revealed that Rashidul Haque had transported the fake gold item from Lakhimpur to Howly with the intent of deceiving potential buyers.
Barpeta’s Superintendent of Police, Sushanta Biswa Sarma, emphasized the department’s commitment to rooting out such fraudulent activities. The arrested men are currently under interrogation, with the police aiming to uncover the extent of the fake gold trade in the region. SP Sarma indicated that more arrests could follow as the investigation deepens.
This successful operation is part of a broader crackdown by Assam’s law enforcement on the proliferation of fake gold scams, particularly in rural areas where such deceitful practices are more likely to go unnoticed. The police’s ongoing efforts aim to protect the public from being exploited by these scams and to bring those responsible to justice.
