Manipur CM N. Biren Singh Engages with JAC After Deadly Drone Strike in Koutruk

Manipur, September 4, 2024 — In the wake of a fatal drone attack in Koutruk that claimed the life of Ngangbam Surbala Devi, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh convened a crucial meeting with the Joint Action Committee (JAC). The attack, reportedly carried out by suspected Kuki militants, has heightened tensions in the region.

Expressing solidarity with the grieving community, Chief Minister Singh remarked on social media, “We deeply empathize with the anguish of the community and are fully committed to taking decisive action to resolve these issues and prevent future incidents.”

The assault, which took place on September 1, also left several individuals injured, including three police officers. In response, the Manipur government has established a high-level investigative committee, led by Additional DGP (Int) Ashutosh Kumar Sinha, to examine the attack and develop countermeasures against such drone-based threats.

The Director General of Police described the incident as “unprecedented,” emphasizing the advanced nature of the militants’ tactics, which involved the use of multiple RPGs delivered via drones. The five-member committee, comprising senior officials from the army, air force, and paramilitary forces, has been tasked with submitting a comprehensive report by September 13.
