Assam Cabinet Greenlights 39 New Sub-Districts to Boost Grassroots Governance

Guwahati, September 5, 2024 — The Assam Cabinet has approved the establishment of 39 new sub-districts as part of a strategic initiative to enhance grassroots governance. This operational phase is set to commence from October 2 to October 8, 2024.

The newly approved sub-districts across various districts are:

  • Kamrup Metro: Dispur, Demoria, North Guwahati, Jalukbari
  • Darrang: Sipajhar, Dalgaon
  • Morigaon: Jagiroad, Lahorighat
  • Hojai: Lumding
  • Sonitpur: Dhekiajuli, Noduar
  • Dibrugarh: Khuwang, Duliajan, Tingkhong, Naharkotia
  • Charaideo: Mohmara
  • Karimganj: Patharkandi, Ramkrishna Nagar
  • Dhubri: Bilasipara, Golakganj
  • Bongaigaon: Abhayapuri
  • Kampur: Rangia
  • Nagaon: Kaliabor, Roha
  • Biswanath: Gohpur, Behali
  • Lakhimpur: Dhakuakhana
  • Dhemaji: Jonai
  • Tinsukia: Margherita, Sadiya, Doom Dooma
  • Sivasagar: Nazira, Demow
  • Jorhat: Titabor
  • Golaghat: Bokakhat, Sarupathar, Dergaon
  • Cachar: Lakhipur
  • Goalpara: Goalpara West

This move aims to improve administrative efficiency and bring governance closer to the citizens. Each sub-district will be managed by an Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) and two Assistant Commissioners, ensuring effective local administration.

The Cabinet has also approved the finalization of headquarters for these sub-districts to ensure optimal accessibility. Additionally, a new Circle and sub-district in Behali have been authorized to further bolster administrative capabilities in the region.
