Assam Government Sets the Record Straight on Smart Meters, Showcases Consumer Benefits

The Assam Government, via the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL), has dispelled myths surrounding smart meters and emphasized their benefits for consumers. Addressing common misconceptions, the government clarified that smart prepaid meters are designed to promote energy efficiency and cost savings, not to increase electricity bills. Users have reported up to a 50% reduction in consumption compared to previous postpaid billing periods.

The government highlighted several advantages of smart meters, including simplified recharging processes, an emergency credit of ₹300, and the ability to pay old bills in small daily installments. Additionally, smart meters support solar rooftop installations without extra costs and feature a Tariff of the Day policy for accessing cheaper power rates.

APDCL assured that smart meters provide accurate readings comparable to traditional meters. For verification, consumers can compare their current bills with those from the previous year or request the installation of a traditional meter alongside the smart meter. For concerns or queries, APDCL can be contacted at 1912, 7575999666, or 8876100100.
