Agartala, Tripura — Tripura Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma has issued a two-day ultimatum to Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman to substantiate his corruption allegations. Debbarma has promised to resign from politics if Barman’s claims are proven true. The confrontation follows Barman’s recent allegations in the state assembly accusing Debbarma and his family of acquiring substantial properties through corrupt means.
Barman, a seasoned legislator, alleged that Debbarma owned properties in Agartala, a petrol pump in Khowai, and a flat in Delhi obtained illegally. In response, Debbarma firmly denied these accusations, asserting that his family’s wealth was acquired legitimately through his parents’ government jobs and his own career as a government-approved contractor since 1989.
Debbarma announced his intention to file a defamation suit against Barman, accusing him of spreading false charges. Barman, in turn, welcomed the legal challenge and reiterated his allegations, demanding Debbarma’s immediate removal from office. He accused Debbarma of using his political influence to avoid accountability.
Debbarma has criticized Barman’s allegations as baseless and a strategy to undermine his political career. “If he can prove the corruption charges, I will leave politics,” Debbarma stated, challenging Barman to provide evidence.
