The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) government in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) is facing mounting protests in Baksa, sparked by the collapse of a vital bridge that has isolated several villages from the main road network. Demonstrators targeted local MLA Urkhao Goura Brahma, expressing their anger at the ruling administration’s failure to address critical infrastructure issues.
Hundreds of residents flooded the streets, blocking roads and chanting slogans against what they perceive as government inaction. The protesters highlighted the deteriorating infrastructure, particularly the bridge collapse, which has severely hampered transportation for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Critics of MLA U.G. Brahma pointed to his three-year tenure, accusing him of delivering only empty promises. “In these three years, we have received nothing but hollow assurances,” a protester declared.
The situation intensified with the collapse of the road connecting Dumuni and Daodhara, where severe erosion has created a hazardous pit, making it unsafe for vehicles. Currently, only bicycles can navigate the route, posing significant risks to pedestrians.
Chants of “Pramod Boro Hai Hai” and “Urkhao Gaura Brahma Hai Hai” echoed through the protests as residents demanded immediate government action to repair the damaged infrastructure. Many voiced skepticism over BTR Chief Pramod Boro’s lofty claims of transforming the region into a “Switzerland,” drawing attention to the stark disparity between promises made and the reality faced by local communities.
Protesters are urging the BTR government to take swift action to restore safe access for affected villagers and address their infrastructure concerns.
