Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to Discuss Justice Biplab Kumar Sarma Committee Recommendations with AASU

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is scheduled to meet with the leadership of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on September 26 to discuss the recommendations put forth by the Justice Biplab Kumar Sarma Committee. The meeting will take place at 3 PM at the Chief Minister’s office and will include key AASU figures such as the president, general secretary, and chief advisors.

This meeting is the first in a series of weekly discussions aimed at fostering collaboration between the government and AASU over the next few months. The Chief Minister has underscored the importance of AASU’s involvement in ensuring transparent dialogue as the government progresses toward implementing the committee’s recommendations.

Previously, the Chief Minister announced plans to act on 57 of the 67 recommendations made by the committee. Out of these, 52 recommendations fall under the state’s jurisdiction, while five or six are categorized within the concurrent list. The remaining recommendations may necessitate constitutional amendments.

The key themes of the recommendations focus on land, language, and cultural preservation. Several policies are ready for immediate implementation, particularly in the Barak Valley. The proposed weekly consultations with AASU aim to facilitate a smooth rollout, with a goal of implementing 52 of the suggestions by Bohag Bihu next year. Broader discussions will also involve communities from Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, and the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

Decisions regarding language policy will be made following consultations with representatives from the Barak Valley and Sixth Schedule areas, while implementation in other regions is expected to occur soon.
