Meghalaya Delays Launch of QR Code Tracking System for Liquor Products

Shillong, Meghalaya — The Meghalaya government’s plan to implement a QR code tracking system for excise products remains delayed, with the initiative aiming to generate Rs 500 crore in revenue from liquor sales yet to take effect. The decision, approved during a cabinet meeting on September 25, is still pending execution.

Excise Minister Kyrmen Shylla addressed the delay, acknowledging that the system, which features QR code holograms designed to prevent revenue leakages, has not progressed as anticipated. Shylla urged the Excise Department to accelerate the rollout, noting that the associated costs of implementing this technology would ultimately be borne by consumers.

Previously, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced the introduction of QR code holograms on all liquor bottles sold in the state, with the aim of real-time monitoring of excise activities. This tracking system is intended to provide detailed data on the movement of each bottle, from production to sale.

“The QR code will offer real-time updates on stock, production, and sales, and assist in monitoring revenue generated from these transactions,” Sangma explained, underscoring the system’s role in enhancing transparency and efficiency within the Excise Department.

While stakeholders await the rollout of the tracking system, questions remain about its timeline and effectiveness in curbing illicit liquor trade and boosting state revenue.
