Manipur Police Arrest Insurgents Involved in Extortion Activities

In a significant operation, a team of Special Commandos from the Manipur Police apprehended two suspects linked to an alleged insurgent group accused of extorting money from government officials and businessmen in Imphal East. The arrests took place on Friday near the gate of the Royal Palace in Imphal East district.

Police sources revealed that the operation was prompted by intelligence indicating that cadres from the Kangleipak Communist Party – People’s War Group (KCP-PWG) were involved in extortion activities targeting non-local traders. Acting on this information, the Special Commandos conducted a raid at Pureiromba Khongnangmakhong on Friday night.

During the operation, the two suspected insurgents were identified as Mutum Inao Singh (31) and Khwairakpam Rajen Singh (25). Along with their arrest, police recovered a two-wheeler, Rs 7,600 in cash, and a sling bag. The raid also yielded various digital devices, including two mobile phones, SIM cards, pen drives, and DVRs, as well as documents including two ID cards.

According to the police report, the arrested individuals were implicated in extorting money from the general public and engaging in other criminal activities. The operation was crucial, given that the insurgents were reportedly planning further anti-social activities, including extortion campaigns against non-locals and potential attacks on security forces using explosives.

The suspects have been booked under the relevant laws and were subsequently handed over to the Imphal East district police along with the seized items for further investigation.
