Nepal’s PM KP Sharma Oli Reaffirms Commitment to ‘One China’ Policy, Vows No Anti-China Activities

On October 20, Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the ‘One China’ policy, vowing that no anti-China activities would be allowed within Nepal’s borders. His remarks came during a high-level meeting with a Chinese delegation led by Chen Jining, a member of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, held at Oli’s official residence in Baluwatar, Kathmandu.

During the meeting, Oli, known for his pro-China stance, reiterated that Nepal firmly supports China’s sovereignty claims over Taiwan and will not tolerate any actions against China’s territorial integrity. This aligns with China’s long-standing position that Taiwan is an inseparable part of its territory, requiring all nations with diplomatic ties to Beijing to uphold the ‘One China’ principle.

The discussions between Oli and the Chinese delegation focused on strengthening bilateral relations and fostering cooperation between the CPC and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), which Oli chairs. Oli expressed hope for continued Chinese support in advancing Nepal’s economic development and stressed the importance of deepening ties through high-level exchanges and collaborations.

Prime Minister Oli also praised China’s achievements under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, particularly in poverty alleviation and comprehensive development. He emphasized Nepal’s interest in learning from China’s developmental model to drive progress in his country.

The Chinese delegation, led by Chen Jining, reaffirmed China’s unwavering support for Nepal’s growth and prosperity. Chen conveyed Beijing’s respect for Nepal’s political decisions, underscoring the mutual desire to strengthen diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between the two nations.

The meeting also highlighted Nepal’s current political landscape, with Oli briefing the Chinese delegation on the coalition government formed by the CPN (UML) and the Nepali Congress, aimed at ensuring political stability.

Key figures in attendance included Bishnu Prasad Rimal, Oli’s Chief Advisor, Raghubir Mahaseth, CPN (UML) Secretary and Foreign Department Chief, and Chen Song, China’s Ambassador to Nepal. The discussions underscored both countries’ shared commitment to enhancing their strategic partnership and regional cooperation.
