Assam Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) co-in-charge of Jharkhand, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has leveled serious accusations against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, claiming that Gandhi is attempting to create divisions within the Hindu community. Sarma’s remarks come in the lead-up to the upcoming elections in Jharkhand, where he expressed confidence in the BJP’s chances of success.
During a public address, Sarma emphasized the heightened enthusiasm among the electorate compared to previous elections, suggesting that this energy could translate into significant support for the BJP. “The current excitement among the people is a clear indication that we have a strong chance of success,” he stated.
Sarma also addressed ongoing concerns regarding illegal infiltrators in Jharkhand, describing them as a threat to the identities of both tribal and Hindu societies. He stressed the importance of unity within the community to protect against these external threats, stating, “Remaining united is crucial to safeguarding our identity.”
In response to criticism of his comments on infiltrators, Sarma defended his statements, insisting they were being misinterpreted. He rhetorically asked, “Why complain against me? What am I saying? Why are they hurt when I speak against infiltrators?” He clarified that his remarks were not aimed at any particular religious group, asserting, “Talking about Hindus doesn’t mean targeting Muslims. I don’t even utter the word – Muslim.” This clarification appears aimed at diffusing tensions that can arise in discussions about national identity and security.
Meanwhile, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has countered Sarma’s assertions, alleging that the identity of Jharkhand’s tribes is being eroded due to the lack of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for certain communities. Speaking at an election rally in Tapkara, Khunti district, Soren raised concerns for the welfare of numerous individuals with roots in Jharkhand who are currently living in the tea gardens of Assam, pointing to their poor living conditions as a significant issue.
As the political landscape heats up ahead of the elections, the exchange between Sarma and Soren highlights the contentious nature of regional identity and the competing narratives put forth by the leading political parties in Jharkhand.
