Manipur CM Lauds Thadou Convention’s Support for NRC and Anti-Drug Campaign
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has expressed satisfaction over a recent resolution passed at the Thadou Convention, which voiced support for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the state’s “War on Drugs” campaign. The Thadou tribe, the largest within the Kuki community, declared its backing of these initiatives, emphasizing its distinct identity separate from the Kuki community.
During a launch event for the Chief Minister’s Coaching Scheme for Entrance Examinations to Professional Courses, Singh stated, “Peace will definitely come. Thadou is one of the oldest tribes in the state.” He emphasized that the government would not compromise its policies, such as protecting indigenous communities and addressing external influences, to accommodate outsiders.
The Thadou tribe’s stance, asserting itself as an independent entity from the Kuki community, was well received by civil society organisations, who appreciated its support for the NRC and anti-drug initiatives.
Singh also underscored the significance of the new coaching scheme, which aims to empower Manipur students for exams like JEE and NEET. He noted that educated individuals are more likely to contribute positively to society and protect national unity. Additionally, Singh encouraged selected students to plant a tree under the “Maa Ke Naam Ek Per” initiative, blending academic pursuits with environmental responsibility.
The Chief Minister reiterated that his government’s focus remains on preserving the rights of indigenous communities and upholding national unity while continuing its “War on Drugs” and other key initiatives.
